Shorter… or just tighter?
Broadly, there’s an assumption & an acceptance that, especially as we age, we will get shorter, but often, we are simply getting tighter… Now, that doesn’t mean there isn’t some compression in the spinal discs, but, very often we could start by stretching our muscles which, in turn ‘releases’ our skeleton (including the spine) & allows the possibility of length…
A few years ago, I clocked that I couldn’t reach the top shelf in a kitchen cupboard, & was a bit confused, as I was certain this was new… I had to have a chat with myself & ask how had this happened?! Very quickly it became clear that I hadn’t been doing as much stretching as previously – particularly side stretches, which resulted in my torso, generally, & overall ‘reach’ being impacted. I put in place some changes, having decided this was not acceptable (!), not least because I aim to practise what I preach & keep working on my body so it delivers what I need in my life… You could do some checks yourself & ensure you make changes to retain flexibility – one of the biggest ways of staying mobileĀ & vital as the years go by.
As a general note, we all tend to lengthen after sleeping – you can test if this is true for you with some blue tack against a wall / door or whatever… And, my massage treatments usually result in an extra inch or two in height – I’ve had clients need to alter their mirrors when driving home afterwards…
My aim is to elongate you during a treatment by working on the soft tissue & therefore giving more space for the skeleton. Once you ‘clamp’ your skeleton, your entire body starts to lock up – you’ve ‘trapped’ it in tight muscles which prevents mobility, impacting joints & more.
Massage is SO much more than simple indulgence... we are aiming, together, to make useful & profound changes… If you like the sound of my input, do get in touch…
